Orthodontic FAQs
What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics (or dentofacial orthopedics) is a dental specialty focused on correcting irregularities in teeth and jaw alignment.
What does an orthodontist do?
An orthodontist is a dentist with 2–3 extra years of training in aligning teeth, fixing bite issues, and improving jaw structure.
When should I see an orthodontist?
Any age is a great time! The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first visit by age 7, but many adults benefit from treatment too.
How do I care for my teeth with braces or retainers?
- Brush after every meal and floss daily
- Use fluoride toothpaste and rinse if recommended
- Keep retainers clean and safe in their case when not in use
- Avoid sticky, sugary, or hard foods
- See your dentist every 6 months for cleanings
What types of braces are there?
- Traditional metal braces
- Clear or ceramic braces
- Self-ligating braces
- Invisible aligners (like Invisalign)
How long will I wear braces?
Treatment typically lasts 6–30 months, with most cases around 22 months.
Do braces hurt?
You might feel mild discomfort for a few days after getting or adjusting braces, but it’s temporary and manageable.
Do I need to brush more with braces?
Yes. Brush at least four times a day and floss daily to prevent plaque buildup. We’ll show you the best technique.
Should I still see my dentist during treatment?
Absolutely. Regular dental checkups are essential to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
Can I play sports or instruments with braces?
Yes! Braces won’t stop you from participating in activities. Just wear a mouthguard for contact sports.
